Application process 


The next DBA intake will be from January 2013. Admissions for the next cohort will take place during the 2nd half of 2012.

An application pack comprising the following must reach the DBA Programme Director at GIBS before the due date.

  • A completed and signed hardcopy of the application form.
  • An application fee is payable to the Gordon Institute of Business Science. (fee update in 2012)
  • Official academic transcripts of all academic qualifications obtained to date. Please note that a degree certificate is not a transcript.
  • A typed essay of not less than 500 words motivating your reasons for wishing to embark on a DBA at GIBS and stating why you believe the DBA will contribute to meeting your personal and career aspirations.
  • A typed summary of approximately 1 000 words mapping your research interests and current thinking with regard to a potential research topic and plan for your doctoral thesis. Note that this will not be treated as an approved research proposal for your DBA thesis should your application be successful.
  • A typed essay of not less than 500 words discussing your personal strengths, weaknesses, aspirations and goals, values, major achievements, challenges or disappointments, etc.
  • Reports from two independent professional referees with whom you are well acquainted, commenting on your suitability for advanced academic study towards a DBA degree. The signed referees’ reports should be submitted on the Reference Form as hardcopies.
  • Eligible candidates with valid applications will be invited for interviews during October/November 2012. The DBA Admissions Committee will meet in late November 2012 to consider recommendations for the 2013 DBA intake. Notification of acceptance to the DBA programme commencing in January 2013 will be communicated to successful candidates before the end of November 2012. Successful candidates will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit of R2 000 - deductible from tuition fees for Year One in 2013. Upon receipt of the deposit, prescribed study materials for directed learning modules in the first quarter will be made available.
