Entrance tests

Applicants for the Gordon Institute of Business Science’s MBA degree and our Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (PDBA) programmes must complete either GIBS’ entrance test or the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test).

Please note that these tests represent only one of several selection criteria for admission to the programmes. We will also look carefully at the applicant’s references and essays, their undergraduate academic record, their working experience and their interview record (if applicable). Performance on these tests does not necessarily reflect on your suitability for any other course or position.

The GIBS entrance test
GIBS entrance tests are a selection of psychometric tests that have been especially selected for GIBS. If you wish to do this entrance test, please note the following:

The cost of the test is covered in your application fee which will need to be paid in full prior to booking your test date.

  • To register, click here or email admissions@gibs.co.za
  • Tests must be written before the closing date for applications
  • The tests measure language skills, verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning and learning potential.
  • The test duration is four to five hours. You will need to be at GIBS by 07h30. Please note that the testing is fairly demanding and you should, therefore, not schedule any appointments immediately after testing or arrive for the test feeling tired or unwell.

As this is largely a test of your ability to learn there is no preparation to be done.

Please bring a certified copy of your identity document to the test.

  • A copy of the results will be automatically forwarded to GIBS.
  • In terms of the Health Professions Act, a suitably registered psychologist should provide individual feedback on test results.

You will be sent a summarised version of your test results.

Should an applicant wish to discuss the results of his/her test, an interview with the testing organisation counsellor will need to be organised by the applicant which will be for the applicant’s account.

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)

Alternatively, if you do not do the GIBS entrance test, you will need to do the GMAT.

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is an internationally recognised test designed to help graduate business schools assess the qualifications of those who seek admission to study for an MBA. Almost 1 700 graduate management programmes around the world use GMAT scores as part of their selection procedure. If you wish to do the GMAT, please visit the website or send an email to justin.jacobs@pearson.com

  • The GMAT measures basic verbal, mathematical and analytical writing skills. It does not presuppose any specific knowledge of business or any other content areas, nor does it measure achievement  in any particular subject
  • To familiarise yourself with the mechanics of the test and the kinds of questions that are asked, access GMAT’s website at http://www.pearson.com/
  • You may designate up to five academic institutions to receive a copy of your test scores – these are sent electronically and will be received by them between 16 to 20 days after you have written your test.

If you are going to submit a GMAT result, please inform us when you will be writing the test.
Applicants submitting GMAT scores and not doing the GIBS test may deduct R500 from their application fee.
