Introduction
The landscape for digital multimedia services is undergoing a global revolution as a result of the convergence of telecommunications, broadcasting and Internet networking technologies. Regulators, policy-makers, and industry professionals are challenged to keep pace with the rapidly evolving technological, economic and legal parameters of this new digital multimedia environment while simultaneously managing the optimum balance between public interest, market growth and industry competitiveness on a global stage.
How you will benefit
This programme will expose participants to the latest developments and trends in digital multimedia services, the evolving business models and regulatory challenges that convergence brings and the economic opportunities and challenges this poses for African markets. The programme will be driven by a diverse range of local and international academic faculty, industry speakers, African regulators, government and other organisations involved in the rollout of digital multimedia services on the continent. The course contains a mix of classroom teaching, discussion/debate, external visits, industry analysis, and organisational and management skills development.
Who should attend?
Communications regulators and policy makers from Africa as well as those responsible for regulatory affairs within telecom operators, service providers, broadcasters, media companies and technology suppliers, who have to keep pace with the rapid developments in digital technology while maintaining a vibrant, competitive market that serves consumers and businesses. The programme does not require any detailed prior technology knowledge.
Key outcomes:
- Understand the current reality of digital convergence and its disruptive impact on industry business models and the need for regulators to adapt.
- Examine the evolving content value chain, and how broadcasters are combating the growing availability of online TV and video content.
- Debate strategies to provide universal broadband services in developed and emerging markets and the economic and social opportunities that this creates.
- Understand how the availability of mobile devices and spread of social networks is changing consumer behaviour.
- Visit a Johannesburg township to discover how township businesses and low-income residents consume digital media and access online services.
- Hear experiences from regulators in East, West and South Africa on the rollout of broadband multimedia services.
- Learn the principles of Stakeholder Management and acquire tools for performing Regulatory Impact Assessments.
Participants will also have plenty of opportunity to collaborate in syndicate sessions to analyse and provide solutions to specific issues faced in their own organisation.
