Successful execution of strategy has become core to the sustained success of organisations as advantages attained through unique product attributes are quickly dissipated through accelerating knowledge dispersion and increased competition. Many organisations fail because they are unable to execute, despite having good strategies.

This course is about understanding strategy execution as a competence which can be designed, crafted and grown to provide the organisation with a sustainable competitive advantage. While strategy design is largely about making choices about products, services, markets and ways of competing; execution is about architecting and building an appropriate organisation, acting on the strategy design choices, reviewing the progress against the goals and adjusting the organisation to the changing environment.

The course focuses on the elements of organisation design, competences development and processes of strategy execution . It makes use of contemporary local and international case studies in execution in an open discussion and action learning format. This facilitates participant-centric and local-global context learning. Participants will be exposed to the latest thinking, concepts and best practices in the execution of business and corporate strategy.

The course takes a structured approach to execution which will blend process, structural, leadership and cultural elements and comprises seven evening sessions over four weeks followed by a full day workshop. At the end of each session each participant is expected to complete a two to three page application of the specific ideas of the session to their respective enterprise, business unit or division. In the full day workshop each participant develops key elements of organisation design, a monitoring system and a detailed action plan for the next 90 days for their business unit.

Despite increasing complexity in the global business environment the subject of execution has largely remained experiential. Most executive programmes on strategy spend a large percentage of time on strategy design and leave only a small part to covering the execution of strategy. The reason for this is that most facilitators of executive programmes are academics with little experience in execution. This course is exclusively about execution and is facilitated by distinctive faculty who combine strong academic credentials with significant experience in execution in diverse countries.

The course is ideal for business unit leaders, functional heads, senior managers, business consultants, analysts and strategy executives in businesses who wish to update and hone their ability to develop and understand the latest practices in strategy execution. The delegates who participate in this programme will develop a pragmatic mastery of the subject of strategy execution.


Faculty

Dr. Raj Raina has over 20 years of strategic management, consulting and operational experience. He has worked for international organisations such as The World Bank, IBM, Coopers & Lybrand as well as local enterprises such as MTN, Continental Tyres and LNJ Group. He has worked extensively in India, France, Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa. Dr Raina worked in senior strategy and programme execution roles for IBM’s regional head office in Paris and MTN in Nigeria and South Africa.

He has designed and taught full courses and strategy at many schools in India, France and South Africa. He is currently a senior lecturer in Strategy at GIBS and teaches strategy in the MBA, DBA and numerous senior executive programmes.

Dr Raina obtained his doctorate in Management with specialisation in Business Policy from the Indian Institute in Management Ahmedabad, India in 1989. His thesis dealt with issues in technology adaptation and covered a study of five joint ventures between India and Europe. In addition, he has a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

His current research interests are study of factors which effect business unit profitability and factors which affect success of businesses in emerging markets. He advises businesses on enhancing their strategic competences.

Professor Nick Binedell is the Founding Director of the Gordon Institute of Business Science in Johannesburg. His academic qualifications include a PhD from the University of Washington in Seattle, an MBA from the University of Cape Town and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Rhodes University.

He is a member of the American Academy of Management and in 1997, 1998 and 2001 was voted the most admired individual in management education at a South African Business School by the Professional Management Review. In 2002 he received the IPM President’s award for his contribution to people development in South Africa. Born in Zimbabwe, he has lived in Germany, Kenya, Yemen, the United Kingdom and the United States.

His areas of expertise are in the fields of business strategy formulation and general management. For the past 20 years he has been a lecturer and consultant working in South Africa, Europe and the United States.

Professor Binedell has worked in various strategy execution roles, having worked as general manager of the Barlow Rand Group earlier in his career. He has also been a business school Director for more than 15 years.

Fees: The fee of R17 200 includes tuition, instruction material, textbooks, light dinners and refreshments, and is VAT exempt. No registration will be confirmed without payment.


Cancellation Policy
Delegates who cancel their registration after the closing date for registrations, or where there is no closing date, less than 14 days prior to programme commencement, will be liable for 50% of the programme fee. Those who do not arrive for the programme will be liable for the full fee. Notification of cancellation must be sent in writing either via e-mail or via fax. All who cancel or do not attend must return the course material intact.
