Frontier

Executive Overview

Frontier immerses senior leaders in the dynamic South African society. This unique programme provides a holistic view of the strategic context of business and establishes a group of peers with deep insight into a changing world.

Organisational benefits of the programme include: improved strategic thinking and risk management; insight into market realities or threats; as well as the stimulation of fresh opportunities. On a personal level, the programme aids in the engagement of employees and improves relationships across personal and sector diversity.

Frontier works with cohorts of six to eight members of senior teams, from select partner companies.

The programme is highly experiential and runs over four modules.

What is the Frontier Programme?

“In times of rapid change, leaders pretend they know what the answers are, leading people into a systemic dynamic where no one is asking the right questions and playing by outdated rules.”
Heifetz and Linsky – “Leadership on the Line”

Frontier is a senior leadership programme, which examines, in real-time, the social, economic and political realities of South Africa and their impact on the leadership context of participants.

It is a participative platform, from which senior leaders from partner organisations will gain first-hand experience of people and places that are key to understanding and reconstructing the landscape. It is both a personal journey and a rigorous executive development process.

Frontier is for established leaders, who usually have ten years of senior management experience. They come from well-run and successful institutions, and are passionate individuals, who have bought into a vision of a better society.

GIBS works with this core group, because they are used to “getting things done”, yet are called to do more in their senior roles. Participants are therefore hungry for new ideas, to make a difference in business and the world at large.

The programme consists of four modules, as well as an opening dinner before Module 1 and a closing ceremony after Module 4. The modules cover important themes, such as what it means to be South African, the complex factors driving political will and the economy, navigating change, leadership in turbulence and sustainable business practices. The programme features:

  • Immersive field-trips in Gauteng and the Western Cape;
  • Sessions anchored by experts;
  • Overnight accommodation in the environment being studied;
  • Group work to deepen understanding, through peer collaboration and discussion;
  • Input from leading-edge thought leaders on each theme;
  • An assignment per module; and

In addition, participants receive preferential access to GIBS Forums and events hosted by the Centre for Leadership and Dialogue.
Speakers of the calibre of Gill Marcus, Joel Netshitenzhe, Gwede Mantashe, Nicky Newton-King, Ahmed Kathrada, Adam Kahane, Arthur Chaskelson, Albie Sachs and Nick Binedell will participate in the programme.
